Penile Curvature

Penile Curvature Correction

Men all over the world have concerns about the size of their penis and although this is not generally spoken about, it is something which everybody has come to accept and acknowledge in some way, be it subconsciously or otherwise.

What people don’t really consider is what men think about the shape of their penis.  Some degree of penile curvature is common amongst all men, but for a percentage of them, the curvature of the penis can be extreme enough to inhibit their sexual performance and cause a serious amount of pain.  For these men, it is most definitely the shape rather than the size of the penis that matters most.

Types of Penile Curvature

Some people would assume that a curved penis is a curved penis and that would be the end of it.  However, there are different forms of penile curvature:

  • Congenital – Congenital penile curvature is present from birth.  Scar tissue on the underside of the shaft of the penis prevents that side of the penis from growing properly.  As a result, the upper side of the penis outgrows the underside and when the penis is erect it bends downwards towards the shorter side.
  • Acquired – Acquired penile curvature, as the name suggests is when penile curvature is acquired.  This can happen at any stage of life and the catalyst of such curvature is not really known.  The curvature takes place when plaque builds up along the shaft of the penis.  In the same way that the scar tissue inhibits growth of one side of the penis with congenital curvature, the plaque build-up acts in the same way for acquired penile curvature.  The condition is known as Peyronies disease and is a degenerative condition, meaning it worsens over time.  One known cause of the disease is blunt trauma to the penis, which often occurs during particularly rough sex.  In some cases, when this happens, the penis can rupture and the plaque begins to build.

For both forms of penile curvature, sexual intercourse and indeed gaining an erection itself can be extremely painful for the sufferer.  Many men with the condition may feel embarrassed by the curve in their penis with some cases being known to result in a ninety degree bend which can make sexual intercourse extremely difficult and in some cases impossible, even without the pain factor.

Correcting Penile Curvature

As with many medical conditions, there are various forms of treatment available to correct penile curvature.  Some are more successful than others and it can often depend on the severity of the problem.  If the problem is addressed in its early stages, there are a number of non-invasive treatments that may help to straighten the penis:

  • Verapamil injections – Once the penis has been numbed at the base, a series of injections are admitted along the shaft containing verapamil.  The drug works to break up the plaque and scar tissue.  Treatment must be administered once a fortnight until the curvature is corrected.  The method enjoys a relatively high success rate.
  • Pills – Vitamin E supplements are used for their ability to promote healthy skin growth and prevent scarring.  This treatment is really only effective on patients who seek treatment in the first instance of suffering acquired penile curvature.  For those who have mild penile curvature and would not really suffer any severe consequences from the condition with any penile performance issues, doctors may prescribe Colchicine as a form of pain relief.
  • Creams – There are numerous creams on the market containing verapamil.  The active ingredient works in exactly the same way as with the injections, however, in order for it to penetrate the scar tissue, it must be mixed with a particular ingredient which will permeate the skin and carry it to the desired area.  Creams without this ingredient are unlikely to be successful.

Surgery for Penile Curvature

peyroniesUnfortunately, most men who suffer from acquired penile curvature will often leave the problem unresolved until they are no longer able to avoid the subject any longer due to the pain or diminished functionality of their penis.  By the time this happens, it is often too late to use the above treatments.  In such cases, surgery may seem like the only option.

Nesbitt Plication is normally performed on men with congenital penile curvature who have a reasonable length to their penis.  The reason for the reasonable length stipulation is simple: the operation will shorten the penis.  The approach to straighten the penis is carried out by gathering the side of the penis that has outgrown the shorter side in a pinching action.  As the longer side of the penis is pinched, the penis straightens.  Although this treatment has a negative effect on the length of the penis, it does not carry a high risk of erectile dysfunction like other penis operations.

Tissue grafts may be recommended by doctors for patients with severe forms of penile curvature or irregular and multiple places of plaque build-up.  In this highly invasive procedure, the plaque is surgically removed from the penis, allowing it to straighten, before skin from other areas of the body is grafted onto the areas where tissue is missing.  This operation does carry risk of erectile dysfunction as well as the standard risks involved with any form of surgery.

Penis Extenders

Penis extender devices use traction to stretch the side of the penis in an effort to match the other, longer side.  Traction is a proven medical method used for many years to extend limbs.  This method is considered to be the safest, most effective penile correction treatment by professionals and consumers alike.
