Penile Traction – Not Only for Cosmetic Reasons

Often, when people discuss various extension methods for the penis, the motive is for cosmetic purposes or to improve sexual performance. Although these are the most talked about reasons for looking into penile traction, they are not the only reason men look into this option. For many men, penis extension devices have less to do with performance and more to do with comfort. For men suffering with Peyronie’s Disease, penile traction can be one of the few options for successful treatment.

Understanding Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease is the common name for “indurations plastica penis”, its Latin name. The condition was named after Francois Gigot de la Peyronie, a physician who serviced King Louis XV of France personally. Peyronie was the first to document the condition and his exhaustive description of the condition in 1743 connected him to the condition in medical history. Although Peyronie was the personal physician to the King, his description of the condition did not name the King personally though speculation as to whether or not the King suffered from this affliction rages on.

Thought to affect anywhere from 5 – 20% of all men, Peyronie’s Disease is a rare but serious form of Erectile Dysfunction. The conditions affect the connective tissue of the penis and fibrous plaques grow along the shaft. This results in a painful curvature of the penis, lumpy appearance and problems in getting an erection. In some cases, men are simply not able to enjoy sex as the exaggerated curvature of their penis means that achieving and sustaining an erection is simply too painful.

The causes of Peyronie’s Disease remain unclear. Generally, it is believed the fibrous plaques form as the result of some tissue trauma to the penis during sexual activity. In some cases, men might not realize they’ve begun to develop this plaque build-up as a certain amount of curvature is normal. But when the condition becomes more serious, it is impossible to ignore the changes in the shape of the penis. For other men, the condition has been an issue since birth and researchers continue to look for clues that may lead to the true cause of this condition.

Treatment Options for Peyronie’s Disease

Treatment options for this condition vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some men, for example, have minor curvature issues and no pain so, as a result, they simply don’t seek treatment. Other men find that the smaller plaque growths lessen over time and the condition resolves itself. But for some men, treatment becomes necessary if they want to have any chance at an enjoyable sex life.

The first line of treatment for Peyronie’s Disease is usually massage in the hopes that, over time, the plaque growths can be lessened. Other, more invasive, treatments include oral medications, many of which come with unpleasant side effects, penile injections, focused ultrasound treatments and even surgery. Although these can be extreme examples, for some men, they become necessary. One treatment option that often gets overlooked but has enjoyed success for many is penile traction.

TractionTraction devices, often marketed as penis extenders, can help to rectify the curves and abnormalities in shape that are the hallmark of the condition. Over time, these devices deliver results by applying gentle pressure over a long period of time. As this treatment can be done at home and requires no drugs, there are no serious side effects. It’s also a treatment men can explore on their own if they have not yet reached a point where they are ready to see a doctor. Although a consultation with a clinician is the only way to diagnose the condition properly, penile traction offers men a chance to take control of the issue while they wait for an appointment or work up the courage needed to face the issue head on.

Penis extension devices have become increasingly common and have also become the focus of a number of researchers. While many focus on the tangible results penile traction can offer in terms of adding length, others have turned their attention to how these devices can help men with Peyronie’s Disease. The applications these therapeutic devices can offer have brought hope to many men who have struggled with the condition for years. In many cases, the use of a traction device offers the results and help men need in order to not only finally tackle the issue once and for all, but also to reach out for help on finding ways to prevent the condition from reoccurring.
